John W. Lister
Born and raised in southern California, John knew from the time he was in middle school and took his first drafting class, that he wanted to be an architect. After completing his education at University of Southern California, John started his career with the Los Angeles firms of Skidmore Owings and Merrill, notably working on the Universal Studios Amphitheater and Getty Oil World headquarters. Before founding JL Architects, John was the lead project architect on estate homes in Mexico and Maryland and the youngest architect ever named associate at Robinson-Willis, PC in Washington, DC. Since founding JL Architects in 1988, the firm’s focus has evolved to include retail centers, restaurants, entertainment, office buildings, manufacturing, industrial, and multi-family housing.
With licenses in 38 states, John’s diverse experience gives him a unique and fresh perspective. In the digital era, he has expertise in optimizing consumer experiences in-store, at home, and at work. His team is active in sustainability and green building certification, consulting for design professionals and building owners with a guaranteed method for success. John is a member of The American Institute of Architects and ICSC. He serves on the Green Building Initiative’s national Board of Directors leading the Government Engagement Committee. The current Chair of the West Chester Area Council of Governments Building Code Variance Board, John also held the position of Chair of East Bradford Planning Commission. He holds certifications from NCARB, is a Green Globes Professional, and a LEED AP. Having earned multiple degrees from the University of Southern California, John is a rabid Trojans fan and has adopted a loyalty to Philadelphia sports as well.
John is also always quick to share that he has been blessed with 4 children, each of whom he will say he loves and admires the most. He feels particularly fortunate to live in a home of his own design and work in an office building of his own design. Acting as owner/architect/developer of the JLA office building provided the opportunity to learn about development on another level. That experience, along with the rest of life’s journey helps to bring balance of understanding to each client, and each project.
